This is a competency elective unit, which looks at the process of maintaining sheet metal structures

Those who want a career switch to aviation industry and newly recruited personnel, who wish to seek recognition as trained technicians in the aviation industry.

Course Objectives

On completion of this unit, learner will have the knowledge and application skills for this competency unit using appropriate tools, equipment, materials and methods.

Course Synopsis

The competency elements covered in this competency unit are:
1) Repair Minor Sheet Metal Surface Defects
2) Perform Simple Surface Corrosion Treatment
3) Fabricate Sheet Metal Parts
4) Install and Remove Fasteners

Primarily, people who require such competencies are technicians who perform aircraft maintenance (mechanical) and to conduct Engine / Engine Component Repair and Overhaul.

In relation to the WSQ Modules, this is the specialisation/elective competency unit that is required for the said qualification.

Course Structure

There are four competency elements for this module unit. They are:

1) Repair Minor Sheet Metal Surface Defects:

  • Types of minor sheet metal surface defects
  • Processes of repairing minor sheet metal surface defects
  • Safety precautions in repairing minor sheet metal surface defects
  • Processing maintenance documentation
  • Read and interpret basic engineering drawings

2) Perform Simple Surface Corrosion Treatment:

  • Types, characteristics and causes of surface corrosion
  • Mechanical and chemical processes in treating and preventing surface corrosion
  • Safety precautions in treating surface corrosion
  • Processing maintenance documentation

3) Fabricate Sheet Metal Parts:

  • Fabrication drawings and diagrams
  • Types of aircraft sheet metal materials and their basic properties
  • Methods and tools used in developing patterns/templates
  • Processes and tools/equipment used in cutting sheet metal
  • Processes and equipment used in forming sheet metal
  • Procedure of fabricating sheet metal parts
  • Safety precautions in fabricating sheet metal parts
  • Processing maintenance documentation

4) Install and Remove Fasteners:

  • Types and characteristics of fasteners
  • Tools for installing and removing fasteners
  • Process of installing and removing fasteners
  • Safety precautions in installing and removing fasteners
  • Processing maintenance documentation

Student – Lecturer Ratio

Theory: Lecturer to Students is 1:28
Practical: Lecturer to Students is 1:16

Learning And Teaching Methods

All classes will be a mix of lectures and practical skills training

Student Assessment

WSQ courses are assessed by practical assessments

Admission Requirement

WSQ Employability Skills WPLN Proficiency Level 4 equivalent to Lower Secondary

Graduation Requirement

Successful completion of this course will lead to the award of WSQ SOA in Maintain Sheet Metal Structures

Attendance Requirement

Students must achieve a minimum of 75% attendance for all individual modules

SSG Funding

The general eligibility criteria for company sponsored applicants are listed as follows: –
1. Company are registered or incorporated in Singapore
2. Supported cost components (such as Course fees) are fully sponsored by company
3. Trainees are employees who are either Singapore Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident only
4. Trainee have achieved attendance requirement
